How Did We Do?

Marvin Lawrence Niemeyer, 80, of Winona, died Monday, January 7, 2018 at his home. Marv was born August 26, 1938 in Winona to Adolph and Della (Brommerich) Niemeyer. He grew up around Winona and graduated from Winona Senior High School. After school, Marv joined the Air Force and was stationed in Germany along with his two brothers. After returning from the service, Marv married Carol Schmidt on October 20, 1962. The newlyweds welcomed three children into the world, Matthew, Christina, and Andrea. Marv led by example, teaching his children the value of hard work, respect, and love for each other and the Lord. He was a very proud and active in his church, Goodview Trinity, where he served as an elder on many committees and helped start the community garden. He loved his family and Minnesota sports teams. He would faithfully watch the Vikings, Twins, Gophers, and any other Minnesota team. He touched many peoples lives through his love of bowling and his work at Ginny's Supper club. He also worked as a manager at the Cozy Corner, Bay State, and was a Police Officer. In his later years he delivered papers for the Winona Post.
Marv is survived by his loving wife, Carol; children, Matthew (Heidi) Niemeyer, Christina Austin, Andrea (Richard) Frick; grandchildren, Bryan, Casey, Elizabeth, Harley, Jacob, Aaron, Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Gaven, Alexis, Eliza; sisters-in-law, Barbara, Melba Niemeyer, Alice Schmidt, Ronald Schmidt.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Walter and Melvin, Marv's twin.

A memorial service for Marv will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, January 11, 2018 with visitation starting at 10 a.m., at Goodview Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Ben Sadler will be officiating. Please view his tribute video and leave a memory of Marv at Hofffuneral.com

Every once in a while you meet someone whose faith is so strong that it kindles the spirit in you as well. Marv was such a person. When Kathy and I first visited Goodview Trinity, Marv was one of the first people to welcome us. Even as Marv's health declined, he and Carol continued to cheerfully serve as greeters. I will never forget Marv's smile, warmth and caring. I am grateful that God blessed me with the opportunity to meet Marv whom I have no doubt is at Jesus side in Heaven this day.

In Christ,
Scott Guthrie

You have our sympathy. Will always remember walking into church and Marv talking to my dad about all the Minnesota sports teams. Treasure the memories with him, they last forever.

Marv was a wonderful gentleman and a great friend. We got to know each other at Goodview Trinity, where we served on boards and committees together. Marv was as steadfast in his faith as anyone I have known and a real leading light for people like me. I am pleased at the associations we had and the good times we shared. And I will miss him greatly for his welcoming nature, his friendliness, his optimism and his willingness to talk about any of the Minnesota sports teams. Rest in peace, Marv!
