Thomas Newell

Thomas (Tom) Newell, 73, of Winona, died very peacefully at his home on Monday, January 5, 2026 with his wife Pam at his side.

Tom was born in Winona May 26, 1952 to Charles (Chuck) and Shirley (Weinmann) Newell. He attended school in Winona, after which he enlisted in the US Army, serving from 1976 to 1978. Returning to the area, Tom found a position in Highway Maintenance with the Winona County Highway Department. After more than 25 years he retired in 2011.

On September 13, 1986 Tom and Pam (Buchholz) were married and made their home in Winona, which over time was also home to 6 beloved dogs. Quiet and reserved, Tom took great pleasure in being out in nature with trapping, bow hunting, duck and deer hunting, famously passing his love for fishing on to Pam. Tom enjoyed hanging out with friends at the Goodview Bar, pitching in behind the scenes with fish fries, pot lucks and Nascar afternoons.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Chuck and Shirley, his in-laws, Wilmer and Rita Buchholz, and recently by his sister, Sandy Johnson. He is survived by his brother Roger (Dana Roland, Devin and Dougray), Sandy's sons Matt (Sarah Roth, Dorian Strelow) Johnson and Noah (Ashley Stoddard, Xavier Stoddard) Johnson. He is also survived by his brothers- and sisters-in law Chris (Al Herman) Kemp, Karen (Bobby Swears) Buchholz, Jim (Patty) Buchholz, Gary (Mary) Buchholz, and Theresa (Brian) Roper, and all their children.
