Scot Simmons

March 15, 1969 — August 14, 2025

Scot Simmons, a beloved family man and passionate advocate for the outdoors, passed away on August 14, 2025, at the age of 56.

After courageously fighting cancer, Scot found peace in his final days by the Root River, surrounded by family.

Born on March 15, 1969, in Dover, Delaware, to Rufus and Louise (Alford) Simmons, Scot's heart always found its rhythm by the rivers and lakes he cherished. A dedicated fly fisherman, he spent countless joyful days on the water, sharing his passion with others.

Scot's love for fishing became both his livelihood and his calling. As a Fly Fishing Guide and through his work in the Fly Fishing Department at Cabela's/Bass Pro Shops, he mentored countless anglers and helped spark a love for the outdoors in many. His commitment to conservation was evident through his service on the Trout Unlimited Board in the Twin Cities, especially in the Trout in the Classroom program, where he inspired future generations to care for the environment.

As a Black Minnesotan, Scot took pride in breaking barriers in a sport often seen as predominantly white. His gift for teaching, his warmth, and his ability to create meaningful connections made him a beloved figure in the fishing community, and a incredible role model for his son who is following in his footsteps.

Above all, Scot was proud to be a husband, father, and friend. He loved coaching his son, Cooper, in baseball and football, cheering passionately for his Vikings and all Minnesota sports, and camping with his family in Minnesota State Parks and across the West. Scot's charisma, contagious laugh, and ability to make everyone feel valued left an unforgettable mark on all who knew him.

Scot is survived by his wife, Christy (Hartsfield) Simmons; children, Cooper Simmons, Tayah (Matt) Benson, and Peter (Emily) Winn; and grandchildren, Rowan and Brixton Winn. He is also survived by his siblings, Kimberly Waller, Janine (Eric) Lukes, and Lee Simmons; and his father, Rufus (Roslyn) Simmons. He was preceded in death by his dear mother, Louise, and found comfort in knowing he would see her again.

A celebration of Scot's remarkable life will be held on September 28, 2025. Further details will be announced soon. Scot Simmons will be deeply missed, but his love for life will continue to inspire all who knew him.
