Roger Wayne Benson

September 29, 1936 — November 24, 2025

Roger W. Benson, born September 29, 1936, in Winona, Minnesota, to Ervin and Mary Benson. Roger, a beloved father, grandfather, teacher, hockey coach, and Alaska State Trooper, died on Monday, November 24, 2025.

Roger's journey began in Winona, where he made his mark as a standout athlete and his love for hockey was set in motion. A proud graduate of Winona Senior High School, he co-captained both the hockey and football teams and played an integral role in the school's only state tournament hockey team in 1952. His talent was recognized early on when Johnny Mariucci, the esteemed Minnesota hockey coach, hailed him as a "missionary" for southern Minnesota hockey.

He was invited by Coach Mariucci to join the University of Minnesota hockey team as a walk-on, where he spent five years on the ice. During this time, he skated alongside his talented teammate, Herb Brooks, who would famously become the head coach of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team that won the gold medal.

After earning his degree from the University of Minnesota, Roger carried his passion for the game north to Alaska, starting the first high school hockey program at Anchorage High School while teaching there. His love and commitment to the sport lasted a lifetime, as he continued to skate and play with various senior hockey teams into his 80s, showcasing his undying love for the game. He was a proud player for the Calgary Alberta Oil Sharks and participated in the second U.S. vs. Canada tournament for players in their 80s, solidifying his legacy in the hockey community.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Roger served as an Alaska State Trooper, guiding and protecting the community. He was in the Major Crime Investigation Team and had the honor of guarding three Alaskan Governors and the former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, earning personal thank you notes for his exemplary conduct.

Roger's life was enriched by his love for the outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing in the Alaskan wilderness, where he built his own log homes and contributed to the North Slope oil pipeline. He participated in various clubs, including the Moose, Elks, and Winona Redmen.

Roger is survived by his daughters, Kari Rendon and Kristina Cupples; granddaughter, Isabella; nephews Mark and Gregg Benson and niece Karen Akkashian (Benson)

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald Benson.

A celebration of life will be announced and held at a later date.

Hoff Celebration of Life Center is assisting the family.
