Richard Kvam

Richard V. Kvam, age 101 of St. Charles, passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

Richard Virgil Kvam was born on December 12, 1923, to Haskil and Ada (Alfson) Kvam in Harmony township. He attended country school in Wilton Center and Henrytown and completed watch-makers schooling where he learned how to repair clocks and watches. He was a mechanic in Canton and then followed wheat harvest from Kansas to Montana for a season. He then began to haul milk with his dad and uncle on their local route and sheared sheep for extra money. He was an over-the-road trucker for a couple years, hauling loads to the East Coast. On June 3, 1951, Richard and Valerie Bulman were married at the Preston Courthouse and the couple resided in Harmony, Minnesota until 1968 when they moved to St. Charles. He began hauling gas for Bergey Gas (Midland) Company and retired in 1981. He drove truck for Crenlo for a couple years. Valerie passed away in 2017. Richard continued to live up to his nickname "Iron Man" and could fix anything you asked him to. He was an avid hunter, loved to fish on Pelican Lake and was a very active member of the St. Charles United Methodist Church. He could often be seen riding his scooter up town to eat lunch and play cards with his friends at the Senior Center. He was an important part of the local Senior Center in St. Charles and leaned into their community of friendship and fun.

Richard is survived by his sons Dan of West Burke, VT and David (Marie) of St. Charles, grandchildren Danielle (James) Meyers of East Burke, VT, Andrea (Jared) Bosak of Rochester, April Kvam of Dover and David (Kirsten) Kvam of Viola, MN. He is further survived by 9 great-grandchildren and nieces Janet Garnett and Jacquelyn Kvam.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Valerie in 2017, his grandson Matthew Kvam in 2018, daughter-in-law Pamela Kvam in 2024, two brothers Adrian and Milford and twin grandchildren Erick and Katrina Kvam in 1975.

Visitation will be held at Hoff Funeral Home in St. Charles, MN on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 5-7 p.m.

We will celebrate Richard's life with a Memorial Service on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Charles United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., prior to the service.

Burial will take place next to his wife at Hillside Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Alan Fagen, Marty Kvam, Alan Kvam, David Kvam, Danielle Meyers and Keith Busse.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Church and can be mailed to 824 Church Avenue, St. Charles, MN 55972 in memory of Richard Kvam.
