Mildred Aline Johnson was born in 1924 in Friend, Nebraska, to John Walter Theodore Johnson and Karen Marie Hansen Johnson. She graduated from Dorchester High school in Nebraska. During her senior year of high school, Millie lived with her aunt and uncle, Millie and Hank Hansen, on their farm. Right after her high school graduation, Millie and a girlfriend took the train to Seattle where they worked on a B17 at a Boeing Aircraft Factory during the war “Rosie the Riveter.” Millie met Lloyd, who was serving in the Navy, at a roller-skating rink in Seattle. They married on May 20, 1941, in Friend, Nebraska, and moved to Ft. Dodge, Iowa, to start their first farm together.

Millie and Lloyd had many farms over the years, but farmed most of their time in Looney Valley. Millie worked at the garment factory in La Crosse and would hitch a ride with June Jenson and Mary Rostad into work each morning.

Millie was a hard worker. She farmed alongside Lloyd and their son, Dick, for many years, milking cows. Millie took a special interest in raising laying hens and delivered eggs to the surrounding area. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, canning, and spending time outside. Millie was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 36 years.

When Dick was 2 years old, Millie and Lloyd road on Indian Motorcycle to Colorado with Dick sitting between them.

Millie’s great grandson, Riley, referred to Millie as his “Cookie Grandma”.

Millie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; son, Dick; grandson-in-law, Joe Krage, and siblings, Anna, Carl, Oscar “Buck”, and Frank.
