Matthew Monahan

Matthew Paul Monahan, passed away on September 28, 2026, at the age of 53. Born on December 28, 1972, in Winona, MN, Matt grew up on the family farm near Altura, where he learned the value of hard work and community from a young age.

After graduating from Lewiston-Altura High School in 1991, Matt went on to study at Rochester Community College and earned his bachelor's degree in business from Winona State University. He began his career at Fastenal then to Kalmes Implement. He briefly worked at St. Joseph's in Eyota, but returned to Kalmes Implement, where he worked as a parts technician and poured his heart into helping customers, even on his days off. He also worked feeding calves for Richard and John Speltz on Sundays for many years.

Matt was also deeply committed to his community. He contributed his time and leadership as the president of the Winona County Chapter of Pheasants Forever, sat on the Altura City Planning Committee, and served on the St. Aloysius Finance Committee. As an usher at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, he welcomed everyone with kindness and a big smile.

An avid sports fan, Matt loved cheering on all Minnesota teams; the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, Gophers, and Wild, and was always ready to share a fun sports fact or two.

Matt is survived by his loving parents, William and Lucy Monahan; siblings, Catherine (Jason) Maas, and Brother Anthony Monahan; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his Maternal grandparents; Sigvard and Geraldine Mogen, step-grandmother, Ruth Mogen; Paternal grandparents, John and Lorene Monahan, step-grandmother, Winifred Monahan; as well as aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles, MN from 4pm to 7pm. The funeral service will be on Monday, October 5, 2026, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles, MN at 11am. Matthew will be laid to rest at St. Aloysious Catholic Cemetery in Elba, MN.

The family kindly requests that memorials be directed to the St. Aloysius Cemetery Association or the Winona County Chapter of Pheasants Forever.
