Mark Walter Kolter

June 1, 1944 — January 6, 2026

Winona

Mark Walter Kolter Jr., age 81, of Winona, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at his home on January 6.

Mark was born on June 1, 1944, and grew up in Winona, a place he loved deeply and proudly called home throughout his life.

He honorably served in the United States Air Force, an experience that helped shape his lifelong fascination with aviation. Mark went on to enjoy a long and dedicated career at Winona Aggregate, where he worked as a dredge and heavy equipment operator.

A lifelong learner, Mark could often be found reading historical books, especially those about the Wild West, military history, and warplanes. His passion for airplanes and jets never faded; he loved watching jets overhead and attending air shows whenever he could.

For many years, Mark and his wife Barbara spent their winter months together on the beaches of Florida, a place where time seemed to slow and the ocean became part of their daily rhythm. Mark found great peace sitting beside the water, content to watch the waves roll in, often for hours at a time.

Together, Mark and Barbara shared a love for the open road, embarking on long car trips that carried them across the country. Those journeys, filled with conversation, laughter, and quiet moments side by side, took them all around the United States and became some of their most cherished memories.

Above all else, Mark cherished time spent with family and friends. Nothing brought him more joy than a good dinner out and a “very” rare steak. Going out to dinner with Mark was never just a meal; it was often a three to four-hour gathering filled with great conversation, laughter, and stories that made lasting memories.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Jean; his sister, Rebecca; and his former wife, Bonnie Todd.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Barbara; his son, Mark Kolter III (Candy); his daughter, Kymberlee Pichler (Norman); his stepdaughter, Lora Martinson; and his stepson, Andrew Meyer (Nicole). He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and was also blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren. Mark was especially excited and looking forward to becoming a great-great grandfather in March.

Mark will be remembered for his curiosity, his love of learning, his passion for aviation, and the meaningful connections he built with those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
