John Thomas (Tom) McMahon passed away on February 1 at Saint Mary's Hospital due to a hemorrhagic stroke.
Tom was born April 9th, 1942 to James and Elizabeth (Dempsey) in the Chatfield Hospital and was a part of the first graduating class of the new Chatfield high school in 1960.
After high school, Tom worked at Morris Hanson concrete, and with Eugene Jack hauling livestock. He married Nancy Amundson on September 10, 1966 and took over Nancy’s family farm in 1968 becoming a full-time farmer.
Tom and Nancy both enjoyed snowmobiling early on in their marriage. They had two children: Tim born in 1977 and Thomas born in 1979.
Tom was a very social person making conversation with everyone he met. He could talk about farming, tractors, or race cars with just about anyone. He enjoyed watching his kids, and granddaughter Lily, participate in sports or other school activities. He also enjoyed doing custom big round baling for area farmers.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents James and Elizabeth plus two siblings Jim and Joyce. He's survived by his wife Nancy, children Tim and Thomas (Christi), granddaughter Lily, and siblings Ann (Dick) Schindler, Charlotte (James) Ryan, and Bill (Maureen) McMahon.
The funeral will require masks and will have a closed casket due to medical donations.
Funeral Mass for Tom will be 11 a.m. on Friday, February 4, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Chatfield, with Father McGrath officiating. Visitation will be 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Thursday at the church and one hour before the service on Friday. Burial will follow the service at Calvary Cemetery in Chatfield.
