James Torgerson

James Ray Torgerson, 65, of Rushford, MN, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford, MN.

James was born on December 18, 1960, to John and Lois (Sievers) Torgerson in Winona, MN. At age 6, James was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which added extra challenges to his school years. Ironically, he was afraid of dogs as a young child. After graduating from high school, James went on to earn a degree in accounting. James’s life took another major turn at the age of 21 when he lost his sight. He did not let this slow him down; he learned braille, white cane and went to specialized training to learn how to continue living independently. At age 23 he went to school for his 1st guide dog. His 1st dog was Hamlet, followed by Anton, Polaris, and Kellen. James quickly learned to navigate the Twin Cities and eventually owned his own home. He also owned and operated a vending business in the Ramsey County Building. Even with all his health issues, James had a strong drive to remain independent and always had a positive outlook on life.

James is survived by his sisters, Rhonda (Richard) Brand, Jill (Jack) O’Donnell, Jan (Lynn) Haugen, and Faye (Michael) Baker; 14 nieces and nephews; and his retired service dog, Kellen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lois, and an infant brother.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hart, MN. Visitation will be from 5–7 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Hoff Funeral Home in Rushford, MN, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Leader Dogs for the Blind, St. John’s Lutheran Church – Hart, or Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in James’s name.

James’s family would like to send a special thank you to the community of Rushford for always looking out for James when he was out and about; the staff at Good Shepherd for their compassionate care; and his friends who helped James walk his dog, made sure he always had a ride when needed, and provided numerous other services.
