Helen Rose Schumacher, of Altura, died on her 96th birthday, June 9, 2026. Helen was born on June 9, 1930, in New Richmond, Wisconsin, to Lee and Irene Rogers, and she was the proud sister of eight siblings. Helen graduated from New Richmond High School and further pursued her passion for caring for others by attending St. Mary's Nursing School in Rochester, Minnesota.
On May 15, 1950, Helen married Glen Schumacher in New Richmond. Together, they built a beautiful life, including their home in rural Altura, which they created in 1971. Helen was not just a wife and mother; she was an active member of Our Savior's Moravian Church, where she served as the first female elder and lent her beautiful voice to the church choir. Helen was also known for her dedication to the church community, often seen writing newsletters, along with Gladys Anderson, that kept everyone informed and connected.
A natural caregiver, Helen embodied love and nurturing. This was evident when, at 70, she made the selfless decision to donate her kidney to her brother. She always put others first, whether it was through baking exquisite wedding cakes, famous peanut bars, lemon meringue pies, or simply being there for someone in need.
In her life, she and Glen owned Schumacher Transport in Lewiston, and they shared a love for traveling together. Helen was a go-getter who loved socializing, and dancing at the Oaks in Winona in her younger years. She liked to indulge in a little shopping spree. Always well-dressed and a bit of a perfectionist, she approached life with a vibrant spirit, energy, and a smile that was infectious.
Helen leaves behind her children, John Schumacher, Mary (Mark) Olson; grandchildren, Andrew (Kim) Olson, Adam (Emily) Olson, Alexis (Josh Atkinson) Olson; great-grandchildren, Mallory, Gavin, Amelia, Sophia, Olivia, Wesley Olson; brother, Rodney Rogers; and her favorite dog, Mazie.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen; daughter, Jean Ann Schumacher; siblings, Dorothy Thieme, Edith Wilson, Loretta Ewing, Alice Olson, Marvin Rogers, Gale Langer, and LeRoy Rogers.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Our Saviors Moravian Church in Altura, MN at 11am. Visitation will begin an hour prior to the service.
