Harold Brummer

Mar 16, 1946 — Aug 17, 2026

Luverne

Harold was born on the family farm in Harris, IA, on March 16, 1946. He was the fifth of eight children born to John and Florence Brummer.

When Harold was still very young, the family moved to a farm in southwestern Minnesota, close to the NE corner of Jeffers, MN. This is where he grew up and farmed with his family. His younger years were filled with family, farming, horses, hunting pheasants, hunting ducks and football. He graduated from Jeffers High School in 1964.

In November of 1965, Harold was drafted into the Navy and was sent to Vietnam. He served in the Navy Seabees. The Navy Seabees form the US Naval Construction Forces. He was honorably discharged in November of 1969.

Shortly thereafter, Harold entered the workforce with Northwestern Bell and started his career as a telephone man. His career in telecommunications lasted for 46 years in various roles and with various companies.

Nine months after his discharge from the Navy he met the girl of his dreams. That chance meeting took place on that girl’s 21st birthday. Lynn Mattson would unite with Harold in marriage in November of 1970. That God given relationship would last 52 years until Lynn’s passing in 2023. They had one son named Tobin (Toby).

Harold had many, many things to keep him occupied outside of his beloved little family. He raised Treeing Walker Coonhounds. Harold competitively coon hunted and competitively bench showed his hounds. He was crazy for horses when he was a boy and then still as a young man. He was even crazier for mules later in his life. In the late 1970’s, Harold combined his love for coon hunting and mule riding. Countless hours at night were spent on the back of a mule listening for his dogs to first find a track and then tree a raccoon. This was his passion. This was his stress relief. It was even better when he was joined by his large group of friends and family, Toby, and maybe even once in a while Lynn – although those were the coon hunting nights that were only on foot. He also spent many hours in a tree stand waiting for deer and many hours afield chasing pheasants. When he was not doing some type of training with his hounds or mules, he would simply saddle up his old mule Ruthy and head into the woods. Harold loved the outdoors.

Harold was blessed with four grandchildren that absolutely lit up his life. Harold and Lynn spent every minute they could with Danner, Carter, Delaney and Carly. The grands loved that time and so did grandma and grandpa. Recently, Harold was blessed with a great granddaughter, Bailey. Our entire family knows that Bailey would have quickly become another light in his life.

In October of 2024, Harold’s Lewy Body dementia prevented him from continuing to live at home. The difficult decision was made to move him to the Minnesota State Veterans Home in Luverne, MN. Our family could not have asked for better care for our dear father, father-in-law, grandpa and brother. Harold became a part of their family. They welcomed him with open arms and for that we are forever grateful.

Harold and Lynn were both born again Christians. They deeply loved Jesus and both looked forward to meeting him one day in heaven. It brings our family much comfort knowing that Harold and Lynn are now worshiping with Jesus each and every day.

Harold is survived by his son and his family. Toby and Jenny; Danner and his wife Kianna, and their daughter, Bailey; Carter, Delaney and Carly. Harold is also survived by his five sisters and a sister-in-law. His sisters, Mae Barker, Betty Freese, Carol Bassett, Alice Hoffman (Paul), Wanda Bacon; and his sister-in-law, Lisa Brummer.

Harold was preceded in death by his father, John Brummer and his mother, Florence Brummer; his wife, Lynn Brummer; his sister, Donna Simonson Eberhart; his brother, Ben Brummer; and his brothers-in-law, Kenneth Barker, Gilbert Simonson, Walter Eberhart, Donald Freese, Dale Bassett and Melvin Bacon.
