Gene Olstad

January 21, 1938 — September 27, 2023

Winona

Gene Olstad, 85, of Winona passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, September 27th 2023. Gene was born in a small farmhouse in Bratsberg, MN on January 21st, 1938. His family then moved to rural Rushford where they farmed until his father’s death in 1984. Growing up on a farm, Gene carried with him the work ethic and “early to bed, early to rise” mentality for the rest of his life. He rose with the birds every day and cherished the peace of the morning.

Gene graduated from Rushford High School in 1956. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in music education from Luther College and earned his master’s degree in music education later in life. One of his fondest memories was touring Europe with the Luther Band during college and he was proud to be a Luther alumnus.

Gene was a band director in Iowa for 5 years before teaching at Lewiston-Altura High School for 30 years until his retirement. He loved being a band director and was beloved by his students. His legacy at LAHS lasted far beyond his retirement.

It was at LAHS that Gene fell in love with the choir teacher, Julie Savant. The two were married on October 16th, 1982 at St. John Fisher Parish in Chicago, IL. They have gone on to share their love of music and each other for almost 41 years.

Gene was a master-musician and trumpet player. He played with the Winona Municipal Band and Winona Brass band for many years. Outside of music, Gene enjoyed playing golf, working out at the YMCA at 5am, spending time in nature, taking his dogs for walks, and spending time with family. He was an active member of First Lutheran of Highland for many years before joining Central Lutheran in Winona. Gene enjoyed lefse and lutefisk and was so proud of his Norwegian heritage.

Gene lived for his three children and they were his pride and joy. He never missed a game or performance. He always gave them unwavering support, sound advice, and kindness. Later in life, he also shared a special bond with his son-in-law. However, those that knew Gene know that the light of his life was his granddaughter, Lily. He adored his role of grandpa, and for many years you could find Gene with painted nails, playing endless games of Sorry!, and taking her for chocolate sundaes.

Gene was quick-witted and always ready with a one-liner. He was a patient, kind, and gentle man. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law that we could have asked for. We will miss him dearly, but will move forward with gratitude for the privilege of having him in our lives.

Gene is survived by his wife, Julie Olstad; his three children, Megan (Eric) Nordgren, Jeanne Olstad, and Tim Olstad; his granddaughter, Lily; his sister, Linda Berg of Rushford, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Inez (Glenna) and Gynther Olstad, his parents-in-law, and brothers-in-law.

A funeral service will be held Monday, October 2, at 10:30 AM at Central Lutheran Church in Winona, with Rev. Michael Short officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, October 1, from 4-6 PM at Hoff Celebration of Life Center – Winona, and will continue one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Winona.
