Gary Long

Gary Allen Long, 66 of Winona, died Sunday, May 4, 2025 at Winona Health.

Gary was born September 8, 1958 in Rochester to Cecil “Baldy” and Dorothy (Evenson) Long. He married Penny McDowell on January 6, 1979 in Spring Valley. Gary worked for Bekins Van Lines before moving his family to Savage, Montana where he worked in the oil fields. While in Montana, their daughter, Bobbi Jo was born. She was his pride and joy. In 1983 the family moved back to Minnesota and later on, Penny and Gary divorced but remained friends. When back in Minnesota, Gary worked for Fields Office Supply before beginning his career at Mayo Clinic.  Gary retired from Mayo Clinic after 36 years and cherished all of the relationships he built with coworkers and patients.

Gary enjoyed fishing, casino trips and stock car races.

He is survived by his daughter, Bobbi Jo (Paul) Bork of Fountain City; granddaughter, Morgz Staffon; former wife, Penny Long; siblings, Robert of Kasson, Kenneth of Rochester, Wayne of Newport News, VA, Merle (Gloria) of Rochester, Warren (Nancy) of Blue Earth, Kathryn (Jeff) Dickhut of Apple Valley, Susan of Rochester, Sam of Rochester, Donna (Mark) Olson of Rochester and Roger of Manhattan , Montana; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Geraldine and Debbie Long; three sisters-in-law, Mary, Lori & Debra and honorary brother, Mike Vesey.

A Celebration of Gary’s life will be 11 a.m., Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Hoff Celebration of Life Center. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m., Friday, June 13 at Hoff and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
