Emilie Hemmelman

February 10, 1939 — November 27, 2023

Emilie Louise Hemmelman went home to heaven on Monday, November 27, 2023.

She was born at home to Frederick and Florence Dambach on February 10, 1939, in Fountain City, WI. It was a cold night, so they set her on the oven door to keep her warm. She never wandered far from the stove for the rest of her life.

Emmy graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1957. She worked for a time as Rudy Miller's personal secretary at Miller Waste Mills before marrying Edward Hemmelman on November 3, 1962. Together Emmy and Ed raised six children.

Mom was well known for her cooking and baking skills. Her bread and rolls, cookies and bars, chicken saltimbocca and homemade pizza were just a few of the family favorites. There was a magnet on Mom's refrigerator that said, "Love People - Make Good Food," and we were a well-loved family.

Mom also put her culinary skills to good use hosting many Red Cross Blood Drives at Goodview Trinity Church and the Elks Club. Her homemade chicken noodle soup and chili always ensured the drive was successful.

At the age of 60, Mom became involved with the local TOPS group, eventually becoming the Chapter Leader. Her weight loss success led to her being named the Minnesota State TOPS Queen for the year 2022.

Mom enjoyed bowling in her earlier years and the yearly driving trips out west with Dad after his retirement.

Emmy is survived by her sister, Dee; her six children, Jeff (Pat), Ed (Kelly), Tim (Sandi), Brenda Carpenter (Ken), Steve, and Sherrie Berg (Tom); grandchildren Kendra, Ethan, Ed III (Anna), James (Abby), John, Anna, Kristina, Sarah, Morgan, Maddie, and David; great-grandchildren Malachi and Titus.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ed, her parents, her brothers Lynn and Carl, and her sister Marlene.

Emmy's family gratefully thanks the staff at Brookdale Senior Living and Winona Area Hospice. She was well loved and taken care of.

A funeral service will be held at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church on Sunday, December 3, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Thanks for taking us to church, Mom. See you in heaven.
