Darlene J. Schober, 82, died on Monday, September 1, 2025 - the 62nd anniversary of her marriage to Myron J. Schober, who preceded her in death in 2014. Darlene lived in Rushford, Minnesota, for 47 years, where she and Myron were the editors and publishers of the Tri-County Record newspaper for 35 of those years. She was devoted to her community, family, friends, and church.
Born June 12, 1943, to Garfield and Mabel Anderson of LaMoure, North Dakota, Darlene was the youngest of four children and was doted on by her parents and older brothers Milton, Gordon, and Kenneth. She cherished her childhood on the family farm near Benson Corner, active in High Prairie Lutheran Church and learning to play the piano-the same piano on which her sons would later learn to play.
She attended a one-room schoolhouse before enrolling at LaMoure High School, where she met Myron in chemistry class-and chemistry truly happened. After two years at Concordia College, Darlene married Myron in 1963. They both graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1966.
Darlene worked in roles that reflected her dedication to service and care: at the Golden Gate Regional Center in San Francisco; as Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools in LaMoure; as Nursing Service Secretary at Deaconess Hospital in Grand Forks; and at Lutheran Social Service and Family Services in Moorhead while Myron served in the Army in Vietnam.
Their sons, John Mark and David, were born in Denver. After a brief time in Great Falls, Montana, the family settled in Rushford, where they found a lasting home. Darlene and Myron were deeply grateful to the Rushford schools, church, and community for providing both a livelihood and a nurturing environment for their sons to grow into adulthood.
Darlene's Rushford friends and neighbors formed a web of love, support, laughter, and learning. A committed church member, she sang in the choir, participated in Bible studies, served on the church board, and was a founding member of Trinity Fellowship ELCA. She cherished the arts-attending RASA events, Commonweal Theatre productions, the Minnesota Beethoven Festival, and Apollo concerts-and read hundreds of novels with her beloved book club.
She kept far-flung friends close through weekly Zooms, and shared joyful gatherings of food, politics, and Norwegian humor with her neighbors. Her yard and garden were filled with birds and flowers, and her heart with affection for her cherished cats. More than anything, Darlene poured love and care into her role as wife and mother-her every action a testament to how deeply she valued her family.
She is survived by her sons, John Mark (S.K. Smith) and David (Rosa Shin); her granddaughter, Yeji; and her brother, Kenneth Anderson. She loved Myron's family as her own for over 60 years and is also survived by her sister-in-law Ardella (Curtis) Norenberg, brother-in-law Wayne (Christy) Schober, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Saints who preceded her in death include her parents, two brothers, four sisters-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.
Arrangements for Darlene's cremation were provided by Hoff Funeral Home. She and Myron will be interred together 3 pm Friday, September 5, at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, Minnesota-though their hearts and legacy will always remain in Rushford. Visitation will be Saturday, September 6, at First Presbyterian Church in Rushford at 2 pm, followed by a funeral service at 4 pm.
Memorial donations may be made to the Rushford Community Foundation (P.O. Box 671), Good Shepherd Lutheran Home (P.O. Box 747), Foundation for Rushford-Peterson Schools (P.O. Box 302), First Presbyterian Church (P.O. Box 116), or Trinity Fellowship ELCA (P.O. Box 372), all of Rushford, MN 55971.
