Clair McDougall, 79, died peacefully in his sleep on October 13, 2023, in Sandy Springs, GA. He was born on August 30, 1944, in Winona, MN, and grew up on a farm near Eyota, MN with his parents (a farmer and a teacher/librarian), brother Duane, grandparents, about 30 cows and plenty of “free range” chickens and geese. He had fond memories of spending his weekends roaming Grandma Martin’s farm with his brother and cousins, looking forward to the precious jar of homemade cookies.
After attending a one-room country school through 5th grade, Clair went on to graduate from Dover-Eyota High School and Winona Technical School where he studied Electronics. In 1966, Clair joined the Army; he excelled in Anti-Aircraft Missile School in Huntsville, AL, spent time in Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX, and was then stationed in Germany where he did technical and engineering work (and developed a love of brats and a new appreciation for Coca-Cola) during the Vietnam War.
Upon return, Clair landed a job with Autocon Industries where he traveled the country doing technical support for water and wastewater systems. Clair moved to Roswell, GA to open their Southeast office and has been in the Atlanta area ever since, eventually moving to the J.K. Duren company where he was the company’s 3rd (and arguably most dedicated) employee. He loved his job, traveling the small towns of the Southeast as an Engineer for water and wastewater systems, finally retiring at age 71.
Clair enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycle, dancing at the American Legion Hall where he met his partner, Janie, and trying out most every restaurant in the Atlanta area. He will be remembered by many friends and family as someone who loved to call and check in, especially if it gave him an opportunity to talk about his kids or grandkids, whom he was incredibly proud of. His grandchildren describe him as generous, caring and kind-hearted; someone who never complained, always showed up early (never know how the traffic is going to be!) in his red VW convertible bug with a box of doughnuts to share.
Clair is preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Beatrice McDougall, wife Charlene Young McDougall and stepson Ron Taylor. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Lindblom and her husband Derek of El Dorado Hills, CA; son, Doug McDougall and his wife Jessica of Decatur, GA; granddaughters Christina and Megan Lindblom and Lila McDougall; grandson Wade McDougall; brother Duane McDougall and his wife Cheryl of Glencoe, MN; his long-time partner Janie Estfan of Sandy Springs, GA; step-daughter Grace Norby of Zimmerman, MN and her children David, Sarah, and Joe Lenz.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 28, at 2pm at Hoff Funeral Home in St. Charles, MN. Following the service, Clair will be laid to rest in Saratoga Cemetery near his parents.
