Arnold Skifton

HOUSTON, MINN. - Arnold H. Skifton, 91, of Houston, died Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at Franciscan - Skemp Healthcare in LaCrosse, Wis. Arnold was born on May 2, 1912, in Houston, Minn. to Lars and Enger (Rosaaen) Skifton. He was raised in Houston and was a 1931 graduate of Houston High School. On March 15, 1939, He was united in marriage with Marie Sylling in Spring Grove, Minn. In 1937 Arnold and Business partner Olaf Mollerstad and their wives bought what is now known as Skifton?s Department Store. Arnold and Marie became sole owners of the store in 1949, which Arnold operated up until the time of his death. Arnold was a very active community member. He was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, where he had been president of the church council. Arnold was also member of and past president of the Houston State Bank Board and the Valley View Nursing Home Board, as well as being a member of the Sons of Norway, Vesterheim Museum, Valheimers Quintet, and a lifetime member of the Luren Singing Society. Arnold and Marie were named Outstanding Senior Citizens in 1988. Faith, family and service to community woven with his love for music were the hallmark of Arnold's life. He is survived by two daughters: Rosaaen (Gary) Olson of Sioux Falls, SD and Mary Ann (Daniel) Thurmer of Fox Point, Wis.; six grandchildren: Erik Olson, Tim Olson, Lars Olson, Jenelle Fong, Johanna Kittelson, and Hans Thurmer; and six great-grandchildren: Johanna, John, Sarah, Jorgen, Luther and Ella. Arnold was preceded in death by his wife, a grandson, four brothers, and one sister. His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2003, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Revs. Lane Zaffke, Louise Stromberg, and Daniel Thurmer officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
